volume 6 number 2 february 2001 TipSheet

Welcome to the February issue of MicroMetric's TipSheet.

This monthly newsletter is targeted at addressing the needs of our customers.

This month we'll continue our Potpourri of Tips.

Tip 352   TIME AND DATE IN THE SYSTEM TRAY Category:   UTILITIES

TClockEx is a surprisingly useful freeware utility. Do you think your taskbar clock's font isn't big enough? Want to see the date and the time? Want the taskbar to show information on available memory or system resources? Or perhaps put some or all of this information in a tool tip? Even if all you're looking for is s simpler way to copy the date to the Clipboard, TClockEx is the tool for you. Download this system tray clock enhancement from our web site Shareware section - it's free. The author's home page is at users.iafrica.com/d/da/dalen/tclockex.htm.

Tip 353   UPDATE YOUR ANTI VIRUS DEFINATION FILES/ENGINE Category:   UTILITIES

You feel good that you run Anti Virus software, right? Well, unless you update the Virus definition files on a routine basis, you may have a false sense of security.

Recently we had several service calls from customers who felt their problems couldn't be caused by a virus, since their anti virus program was always running. Turned out all of their virus definition tables were out of date, with one over six months old!

Virus definition files should be updated on a routine and frequent. For normal use, we recommend monthly updates - for those who are paranoid, weekly. For those who enjoy having us visit for extended periods of time, yearly.

What you should do on a yearly basis is check to see if there are updates to your anti virus software program engine. In many cases this is required with the latest virus definition files.

Tip 354   FREE @HOME SOFTWARE CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS Category:   UTILITIES

We have had several cases lately of customers moving to another area and changing their cable provider. When the computer is then connected to the local high speed Internet access, it doesn't work.

This problem is caused by some poorly documented changes that the @Home software makes to the proxy server configuration sections of the Windows registry. When the software is uninstalled, the uninstaller doesn't remove these changes.

Our recommendation is to request the Comcast installation technician NOT to install the @Home software. They are usually most pleased to comply, as it means less work for them. In our opinion, this software is mainly advertizing and doesn't add anything to the Internet experience.

If you have any questions on this subject, please give us a call and we can discuss it in fuller detail.

Tip 355   ISN'T THAT SPECIAL? PASTE WITHOUT FORMATTING Category:   UTILITIES

How often does this happen to you? You copy text from one Word or WordPerfect document to another, but the text you move doesn't match the font, size, or color of the destination document. So you reselect the text you just pasted and reformat it--and you do this time after time after time. There's a much simpler option: Think "Paste Special".

First, remove the formatting from the text you want to copy. Select the block of text in the source document and choose Edit, Copy (or press Ctrl-C) to copy it to the clipboard as usual. Switch to the destination document, position the cursor where you want the text to appear, and select Edit, Paste Special. Choose Unformatted Text in the Paste Special dialog box, then click OK. All applied formatting disappears, leaving the text in the default style of the destination document.

Tip 356   SEARCH ENGINES - WHICH IS BEST? Category:   UTILITIES

Several readers have asked for our recommendation of the best Internet search engine. Google, www.google.com, is not one of the most well known of the search engines, but it's recently been ranked best by both PC Magazine and PC World. Google is sleek, simple, and fun to use. It promises the web's most relevant results - and delivers.

If you like the Yahoo Web card catalog, try dmoz, www.dmoz.org, home of the Open Directory Project. Sorry, Yahoo - this site's breath, descriptions, and clean feel make it the top Web card catalog.
