The expected release of Microsoft's new Desktop Operating System, Vista, is scheduled for late this year for businesses. As a Certified Microsoft Partner, we have followed its development, and worked with the latest Beta releases.
Vista requires additional resources over and beyond those required for the current operating system, Windows XP in three areas:
- GRAPHICS: Contrary to what you may have heard, you DO NOT need an enhanced video card to run Vista. If it runs on XP, it will run under Vista, in either Classic or To Go mode (a little bit of the new Vista look. If the video card has a Vista driver and has 64-128MB of memory it will run in Aero Express mode; 256MB of memory will run in Aero Glass mode, the difference being the bells and whistles.
- MEMORY: Vista requires 512 MB of RAM, and is usually more comfortable with 1024 MB.
- OPTICAL DRIVE: The distribution media for Vista is DVD - if you only have a CD drive you will need to upgrade.
Additional Vista requirements include a processor of at least 800 MHz and 15 GB of free disk space.
With these requirements in mind, and our experience working with the Beta releases, we have redesigned our Business line of computer systems. They are all based on the AMD line of processors, and all use the newly released AM2 socket, each supporting the following 64 bit processors:
- SEMPRON: 2800+, 3000+, 3200+, 3400+, 3500+, 3600+.
- ATHLON: 3000+, 3200+, 3500+, 3800+
- ATHLON X2 DUAL CORE: 3800+, 4000+, 4200+, 4600+, FX62
